EV PDU selection guide

how to select EV PDU · Buyer guide and manufacturer-evaluation guide

How to Select an EV PDU Manufacturer and Prepare a Complete RFQ

A useful EV PDU evaluation starts with the vehicle architecture and a complete requirement package. Supplier comparison should focus on engineering review, interface discipline, protection reasoning, and validation planning rather than unsupported fixed ratings.

TRHT EV high-voltage power distribution unit

Start with the vehicle high-voltage architecture

Share the SLD, battery boundary, load ownership, charging/conversion interfaces, service strategy, and project stage before comparing package details.

Define electrical duty and load distribution

Operating window, continuous/peak current, and duration

State minimum, nominal, and maximum operating voltage, continuous current, peak current, duration, duty cycle, and thermal assumptions.

Complete high-voltage load/output list

Identify traction, charging, conversion, thermal, auxiliary, and service branches, including connector, fuse, contactor, and sensing expectations.

Define switching and protection requirements

  • Contactor topology, pre-charge, fuse, HVIL, and service disconnect
  • Prospective fault conditions, bus capacitance, battery resistance, and switching sequence
  • Isolation monitoring, sensing, diagnostics, and fault response ownership

Define control, mechanical, connector, cooling, and environment requirements

  • BMS/VCU control logic, CAN/LIN or discrete interfaces
  • Connector families, mounting envelope, busbars, sealing, service access
  • Cooling paths, vibration/environment assumptions, IP target, quantity, and project stage

Evaluate manufacturer engineering and validation capability

Ask for requirement-review method, drawings/BOM discipline, prototype planning, interface freeze, DVP&R and EOL planning, and evidence that is relevant to the proposed configuration. Process visuals do not prove completion for every product.

Information to include in the first RFQ package

A practical first package includes the SLD, load list, duty, protection and control logic, mechanical envelope, interfaces, environment, project stage, sample context, and target production context.

Red flags in supplier evaluation

  • Universal ratings presented without project conditions
  • Certification or customer-case claims without controlled evidence
  • A quote before voltage, load, protection, interfaces, and packaging are sufficiently defined
  • Fixed MOQ, lead-time, or response promises without an approved policy

Buyer checklist

Prepare the review package

Electrical and load data

Voltage window, current duty, duration, load branches, SLD, and fault assumptions.

Protection and controls

Contactors, pre-charge, fuses, HVIL, sensing, BMS/VCU logic, and communications.

Mechanical and environment

Envelope, mounting, connectors, cooling, sealing/IP target, environment, service, and quantity.

Evidence context

Real TRHT engineering and testing context

These visuals support a conservative engineering and workmanship context. They do not identify an exact model or prove a universal rating, certification, customer case, or completed validation result.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

What information is required to customize an EV PDU?

Provide the SLD, voltage/current duty, load list, protection, control interfaces, connectors, envelope, environment, project stage, and quantity context.

Why is a single-line diagram required?

It shows power paths, branch ownership, protection relationships, and interfaces that cannot be inferred from a product label.

How should continuous and peak current be specified?

State each value, duration, duty cycle, operating voltage, thermal assumptions, and whether the value is normal, transient, or fault-related.

When can a final quotation be prepared?

Commercial and technical quotation depends on a sufficiently defined architecture, inputs, interfaces, and review scope; no fixed public timing is promised.
